CREATIVE COMMONS: OPEN SOURCE MUSIC TO SHARE
source: Wikipedia.org & CreativeCommons.org

The Creative Commons website enables copyright holders to grant some of their rights to the public while retaining others. The intention is to avoid the problems which current copyright laws create for the sharing of information. The Creative Commons license lets filmmakers put your music into their film while it's being made. Then, once the film is accepted for distribution and becomes in effect "commercial" as people then start paying to see it, the filmmaker buys a commercial use license - at a price they could determine online at the very beginning. These guys even host your work for free with Creative Commons licenses!

COPYRIGHTING IN THE DIGITAL AGE
source: PBS.org

As the internet has evolved, it has given rise to technologies enabling users to download copyrighted material free of charge. Napster pioneered the field in 1999, and since then file-swapping has become a wildly popular enterprise, resulting in a prolonged and heated debate over how to protect copyrights in the digital era. Is downloading copyrighted music tantamount to stealing? Lawrence Lessig, an expert on Internet law from Stanford University's Law School, and Matt Oppenheim, Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for the Recording Industry Association of America, answer your questions about the debate over digital copyrights.

AN IN-DEPTH GUIDE TO DJING
source: BBC

Most people take it for granted that getting your first pieces of DJ gear is easy, that 2 decks and a mixer is all you need, which is true, but how do you know that you're getting the best kit for your money? If you live in a city or somewhere so close to one that it doesn't have its own scene, it can be little harder to get a break. As a lot of the pubs and bars will belong to big companies and rely on their DJ/music to pull in a crowd which spends thousands every night, they'll want someone with a track record. They may not even have a live DJ at all and just use tapes.

Also check out the Scratch DJ Academy NYC for student education and access to the art form of DJ-ing.

WHY AND WHEN IS CONSIGNMENT BETTER THAN DISTRIBUTION
source: Tim Sweeney

Guess what, as much as you would like him to, God doesn't watch over people shopping for CDs and spiritually guide them or smack them on the head, to your CD in the rack out of thousands of choices. People buy CDs they have heard of. Most importantly, they are more likely to buy them on impulse. What does this have to do with you? Everything!

GRANTS FOR MUSICIANS
source: David Manson for Epinions.com

You might be surprised at the large number of grants that are available to musicians of nearly all genres. I do not enjoy writing grants, but several years ago I found that my musical projects (and those of friends) were doomed without funding. I wrote my first grant in 1986 and received $400 for a jazz festival at my first teaching position. Since then I have written over $65,000 in grants for music organizations and even a few for myself.

PREPARATION FOR SHOPPING YOUR MUSIC TO LABELS
source: LinkMusicAZ

A wise person once said, "Music is valid if it moves the listener." Music is first an art, and if the art does not affect the one intended to experience it, it's difficult to make a case for its existence. Music that does not move the listener is like the proverbial tree that falls in the forest ?no one hears it - or rather, no one wants to... A small independent is most likely looking to pick up the CD as is. They may or may not reprint the CD tray card to put their logo on it. A larger independent will most probably redesign and reprint the entire project. The major record label will certainly rerecord everything and it's a whole different bag

GETTING YOUR MUSIC FROM THE GARAGE TO THE WEB
source: Shure

Wouldn't it be great it there was a way to promote your music to millions of music fans across the world, and it wouldn't cost you a dime? The answer to this question lies in the form of the World Wide Web, and more specifically, the MP3 format. Aside from the normal costs associated with recording and producing a finished sound recording (compact disc or otherwise), distribution of your music on the Web is available at no charge from a variety of sources.

UNDERSTANDING AND WRITING LYRICS PARTS 1-5
source: SoundonSound

Many people think songwriting is a craft that can't be taught. After all, it is often a matter of finding expression for very personal ideas and themes; and beyond the traditional instruction to write about what you know, people are often reluctant to give or receive advice. This is particularly true in the case of writing words ?no-one knows your mind better than you do, so how can anyone else be in a position to tell you how to say what you think? Everyone has their own experiences, beliefs and emotions, and lyric writing often is a matter of expressing these. However, pop lyrics are often written to achieve other things

WEBCASTING MADE EASY    source: Electronic Musician
Webcasters use a variety of media formats. Popular audio formats include M3U (streaming MP3), QuickTime, RealAudio, and Windows Media. In order to receive a Webcast, each audience member must have a media player installed on his or her computer, and that player must be compatible with the format of the Webcast. In this article, I will examine each of those media formats and discuss how to work with them... Streaming provides near-instant gratification. Rather than downloading a complete file, the user receives the audio or video as a bitstream. The bits are played in the order they are received, and then they are discarded. Streaming puts the content in front of the end user much faster than downloading, and it doesn't consume a lot of disk space on the user's computer.

LABELS: MAKE THEM COME TO YOU  source: AandROnline.com
Check out this article and others on this very informative site in their Reading Room
The only way to attract label attention is either:
1) Have a heavyweight manager and/or attorney
2) Have a development deal with a hot production company
3) Have a growing fan base, playing well attended shows and selling lots of CD's independently.

MIXING FUNDAMENTALS: PARTS 1-4    source: HomeRecording
Mixing music is an art, pure and simple. It takes even doses of skill, knowledge, and imagination to effectively mix multiple tracks of music together to come up with a sound that is cohesive, full, and with the right amount of color to the sonic spectrum to make it appealing to the average listener. Just how to do this is a very subjective thing and is not within the scope of this writing. To tell someone how to mix is much like telling someone how to tie their shoe

YOU'RE HIRED! FINDING JOBS IN THE MUSIC VIDEO INDUSTRY    source: AllInfoAbout.com
The music video industry is just a subset of the TV/film industry, so most sites cover all of these media. Experience in one media counts as experience in another, and many people start in music videos so that they can get into other types of productions. Whether you want to stay in music videos or move on to something else, there are a few things to remember. Number one is you've got to pay your dues. Don't expect to be handed a Madonna video as your first job. You may not even get paid for your first job,

WHAT IS A MANAGER AND HOW DO I GET ONE    source: OuterSound
A manager is someone who takes an interest in an artist's career and invests his or her time and energy in helping the artist succeed. The duties of managers are rather ambiguous.
